COURAGE

"Leonidas, King of Sparta, was preparing to make a stand with his Greek troops against the Persian army at Thermopylae or the ‘Hot Gates” in 480 B.C. when a Persian envoy arrived. The man urged on Leonidas the futility of trying to resist the advance of the huge Persian army. "Our archers are so numerous," said the envoy, "that the flight of their arrows darkens the sun." "So much the better," replied Leonidas, "for we shall fight them in the shade." Leonidas made his stand, and died with his 300 troops."

Courage? Or foolishness? That debate about the Battle of Thermopylae has gone on for centuries. Leonidas had no way to win that battle but Greece would ultimately win the war. The courage of the Spartans inspired the rest of Greece to stand against the Persian army. What does it take to have courage? What does that look like in a typical week?

John 16:32-33
"Behold, an hour is coming, and has already come, for you to be scattered, each to is own home, and to leave Me alone; and yet I am not alone, because the Father is with Me. 33 "These things I have spoken to you, so that in Me you may have peace In the world you have tribulation, but take courage; I have overcome the world."

I love this challenge from Jesus. The focus is on a bigger truth or more importantly on Him. He has overcome the world...TAKE COURAGE. I think that Jesus is challenging us to step out and live for Him in a way that says, 'I'm going to live for Christ no matter what comes.' That is the biggest challenge to asking the question what would Jesus do? It is in knowing that what He would do is be courageous and honor God with EVERY part of His life.

NOW...we GET TO do it too. Have fun. LGLO, Pastor Peter

PRAISE the LORD

"Praise the Lord! I will give thanks to the Lord with my whole heart, in the company of the upright, in the congregation. Great are the works of the Lord, studied by all who delight in them. Full of honor and majesty is his work, and his righteousness endures forever. He has gained renown by his wonderful deeds; the Lord is gracious and merciful. He provides food for those who fear him; he is ever mindful of his covenant. He has shown his people the power of his works, in giving them the heritage of the nations. The works of his hands are faithful and just; all his precepts are trustworthy. They are established forever and ever, to be performed with faithfulness and uprightness. He sent redemption to his people; he has commanded his covenant forever. Holy and awesome is his name. The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom; all those who practice it have a good understanding. His praise endures forever." Psalm 111

I wasn’t afraid of water. It had always seemed tame to me — something I put into little bottles for drinking, something I listened to when it came down in big rain droplets outside. But on that June day while we sat stranded on the only highway that would lead us home, I gained a new perspective on water.

As we watched it rush over the highway ahead of us, tearing up chunks of asphalt and making the road impassable, I stood in awe. Once we got our car turned around and headed away from the flood, I watched the mini-waves lap the side of the road and our tires. I discovered a new respect for water.

Until I experienced a flash flood, my relationship with water was an illusion. I thought I had it under control. After the flood, I realized that water is a powerful force — one that has been around much longer than me! I don’t shy away from water, but I approach it with a new reverence. I respect its authority in a new way, and I am wiser for it. I wonder what experience the psalmist had with God to elicit this same realization? Micaela Wood

MOVING and HOW's IT GOING?

Dear WWJDers,
Sorry I have been so disconnected this week. The move got my whole schedule out of whack. Looking forward to getting back on track.

How is everything going? Would love to hear how God is working in and through you! Remember next week is lunch and we will take some time to discuss what has been happening.

THANKS for your faithfulness!

LGLO,
Pastor Peter

CLING to HIM

"Serve only the LORD your God and fear him alone. Obey his commands, listen to his voice, and cling to him." Deut. 13:4

In these times it seems like the best admonition doesn't it?  CLING TO HIM!  Where else are you going to cling today?  Yourself?  How does that help?  Go to the source of life and breath and everything else.  It's a good day to CLING!  Enjoy it!  LGLO,  Pastor Peter

STOP SINNING

"Since therefore Christ suffered in the flesh, arm yourselves with the same way of thinking, for whoever has suffered in the flesh has ceased from sin, 2.so as to live for the rest of the time in the flesh no longer for human passions but for the will of God." 1 Peter 4:1-2 ESV

"So then, since Christ suffered physical pain, you must arm yourselves with the same attitude he had, and be ready to suffer, too.
For if you are willing to suffer for Christ, you have decided to stop sinning. 2.And you won't spend the rest of your life chasing after evil desires, but you will be anxious to do the will of God." 1 Peter 4:1,2 NLT

Stop sinning!  Seems like a simple idea.  Amazing that it is so hard.  The admonition from Peter is to focus on how we are connecting to Christ in order to stop sinning.  In this case his admonition is to connect to His sufferings.  I think the reason why Peter does that is so that we will see the pain of sin.  That we will see how much Christ suffered and realize that His suffering brought us hope.  That we would not easily fall into sin because we would see the more obvious implications of that sin.

Jesus died so that we might have life and have it to the full doing the "will of God".  That is...not sinning!  Have fun!  LGLO,  Pastor Peter

A Guest - Love for the Least

I love Max's simplicity and directness. Good stuff. Enjoy! LGLO, Pastor Peter

Love for the Least
“I was hungry, and you gave me food. I was thirsty, and you gave me something to drink.”
Matthew 25:35

What is the sign of the saved? Their scholarship? Their willingness to go to foreign lands? Their ability to amass an audience and preach? Their skillful pens and hope-filled volumes? Their great miracles? No.

The sign of the saved is their love for the least.

Those put on the right hand of God will be those who gave food to the hungry, drink to the thirsty, warmth to the lonely, clothing to the naked, comfort to the sick, and friendship to the imprisoned.

Did you note how simple the words are? Jesus doesn’t say, “I was sick and you healed me…I was in prison and you liberated me…I was lonely and you built a retirement home for me…” He doesn’t say, “I was thirsty and you gave me spiritual counsel.”

No fanfare. No hoopla. No media coverage. Just good people doing good things.

BOUGHT

"Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, which you have from God, and that you are not your own? For you were bought with a price; therefore glorify God in your body." 1 Corinthians 6:19-20

This is a great admonition and honestly I can't think of a thing to add except...get on it! LGLO, Pastor Peter

WATCH OUT

"But watch out! Be very careful never to forget what you have seen the LORD do for you. Do not let these things escape from your mind as long as you live! And be sure to pass them on to your children and grandchildren." Deut. 4:9

That's a snake just in case it's too small.  Watch out!

Be careful.  Watch out.  Never forget.  All phrases that are a challenge on any given day.  In this text ALL of those are included to remind us of the incredible things that God has done and that since He has done them we are to pass them on to our children and grandchildren.  We don't have too but we do GET TOO.  Have fun today sharing this incredible gift with those around us.  Remind them of the snakes that attack and the God who protects.  Enjoy!  LGLO,  Pastor Peter

God Fighting for Us

I think that I've mentioned to you that I am reading in the Old Testament right now and I just started in Deuteronomy where Moses reflects on all the ways God has blessed and delivered the people over the years.  There is one line that is repeated several times throughout the early chapters that goes like this:

"Do not be afraid of the nations there, for the LORD your God will fight for you.' Deut. 3:22  This is talking about the people of Israel and taking the promised land but does it apply to us today as well?

What do you think? Do we believe God is fighting for us as well? Are we afraid of offering the hope of the Gospel because we are looking at ourselves rather than His provision in the fight for us?

Just thought I'd lob a couple more questions your way to start the day. Have a great time. LGLO, Pastor Peter

Several Good Questions

Sorry to be taking the easy way the last couple of posts but I actually have been enjoying these and thought that you would as well. Great questions to ask. Enjoy! LGLO, Pastor Peter

"But to each one is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good." 1 Cor. 12:7

"Do you know what a rhetorical question is? It is not asked for the sake of getting information, because the answer is obvious. The asker already knows the answer. More than likely it is “yes” and very often it is “well, duh!” We each are part of the body of Christ, right? Of course. We are connected to Jesus, made holy through the resurrection of his body. Would it be right to drag Jesus down through situations that are immoral, course and degrading? Would it be right to crucify Jesus again? Of course not. Likewise, when our individual actions are not helpful to the greater Body of Christ, we are tearing that body down. God wants the opposite of that from us. We are called to live as believers, building each other up, contributing to the common good. Our relationship with God makes the church, this body of ours, the place where the world can see just how close God is. But you already knew that, right?" Chip Reeves

Take Time

"Everyone wants to be known, deeply understood and accepted. Sometimes we do a beautiful job of doing this for one another.  But our Creator knows us totally and accepts us completely — every day and in every moment. Take time to be in the presence of this One who loves you and receives you now."

O Lord, thank you for loving and cherishing all of me. You reach out to me “just as I am” because you are the God of redeeming love. Teach me more about how I am made for you and you for me. Amen. Online Devotional

Take time to focus on Him; it's worth it! Take time to remember that He loves you; it will refresh your soul. You have 168 hours this week...spend them wisely!

Praying with and for you! LGLO, Pastor Peter

When Change Comes...

"The LORD is my shepherd, I shall not want. 2. He makes me lie down in green pastures ; He leads me beside quiet waters.  3. He restores my soul ; He guides me in the paths of righteousness For His name's sake. 4. Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I fear no evil, for You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me. 5. You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies ; You have anointed my head with oil ; My cup overflows. 6. Surely goodness and lovingkindness will follow me all the days of my life, And I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever."  Psalm 23

 http://skaroff.com/blog/

Today is a day in our nation that is pretty impressive.  The peaceful exchange of power from one administration to the next.  There always seems to be a lot of promise during these days as we all hope for the best in a country that has declared since its' inception that it is "one nation under God".

This is a particularly historic day in the inauguration of the first black president.  It was interesting to note that President Obamas' daughter said that 'you better be good' to Dad as they stood at the Lincoln Memorial this week.  There's a lot of truth in that because even in the logo above there has been a lot of promises made for the 'change we need'.

I am not afraid of change at all but when change comes I want to be assured that what we are changing too is a better choice.  That's why I like to go back to simple truths from the Word when things are changing around me.  Psalm 23 is one of those places I love to land.  A lot has been said about this Psalm and I will not add any originally thoughts but I wanted to share one as this day progresses to have on your mind.... 'THE LORD IS MY SHEPHERD...'  what difference does who the President is make?  I know that is an oversimplification but it sure sounds like the right place to focus to me!  Have fun today.  Don't forget to pray when the free or freedom comes up in the speeches.  God is and always will be on the throne!  LGLO,  Pastor Peter

ANYBODY Can Be Great...Martin Luther King Jr.

I thought this was a worthwhile reminder on this day of celebrating Dr. King's birthday. Praying for you! LGLO, Pastor Peter

"The next day Jesus decided to go to Galilee. He found Philip and said to him, “Follow me.” Now Philip was from Bethsaida, the city of Andrew and Peter. Philip found Nathanael and said to him, “We have found him about whom Moses in the law and also the prophets wrote, Jesus son of Joseph from Nazareth.” Nathanael said to him, “Can anything good come out of Nazareth?” Philip said to him, “Come and see.” John 1:43-46

Nathaniel dismissed that Jesus might be the Messiah. Shouldn’t he have come from a prominent family? Shouldn’t he have been from a significant hometown? Could anything good come from Nazereth? Philip responded, “Come and see.”

In 1929, a boy was born on Auburn Avenue in Atlanta, Georgia. He was a pastor’s son from an inner-city neighborhood. “Can anything good come from there?” Come and see. Auburn Avenue gave us Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., the great leader of the Civil Rights Movement. He hoped for the “beloved community,” a renewed world celebrating human worth and dignity. His dream of a new way influenced life in the United States and around the world.

What about us? Can anything good come from our lives? Yes, because Jesus still shows up in our humble surroundings, calling us to follow him. “Everybody can be great,” King said, “because everybody can serve.” Chip Reeves

Men or God

"Am I still seeking the favor of men or of God?  Am I still striving to please men?  If I were still striving to please men I would not be a bond-servant of Christ."  Galatians 1:10

These are so hard but they are a couple of great questions to ask along with WWJD?!  Have fun!  LGLO,  Pastor Peter

Fear

"There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear, because fear involves punishment, and the one who fears is not perfected in love." 1 John 4:18

Have you ever been afraid? I know that I have been on more occasions than I want to admit. Recently I've been thinking that fear is not necessarily a bad thing if it's fear of the right thing or in the Biblical case the right person.  At the same time how we deal with that fear is important.  Does it drive us to the One who is able to "cast out fear" with perfect love?  Does it focus our attention on growing more and more in love with Him?  If the fear we experience is doing that then we have it in the right perspective.  If it is making us cower and pull back with have lost sight of Him.  Be afraid...very afraid...and run to Him.  He is perfect love and He will cast out the fear.  LGLO,  Pastor Peter

The End

As I was teaching through this on Monday night I was struck by something amazing. This text is great simply on its own...without comment (actually there are a lot of those LOL)! ENJOY! LGLO, Pastor Peter

Revelation 1:1-8
1. This is a revelation from Jesus Christ, which God gave him concerning the events that will happen soon. An angel was sent to God's servant John so that John could share the revelation with God's other servants.
2. John faithfully reported the word of God and the testimony of Jesus Christ ? everything he saw.
3. God blesses the one who reads this prophecy to the church, and he blesses all who listen to it and obey what it says. For the time is near when these things will happen.
4. This letter is from John to the seven churches in the province of Asia. Grace and peace from the one who is, who always was, and who is still to come; from the sevenfold Spirit before his throne;
5. and from Jesus Christ, who is the faithful witness to these things, the first to rise from the dead, and the commander of all the rulers of the world. All praise to him who loves us and has freed us from our sins by shedding his blood for us.
6. He has made us his Kingdom and his priests who serve before God his Father. Give to him everlasting glory! He rules forever and ever! Amen!
7. Look! He comes with the clouds of heaven. And everyone will see him ? even those who pierced him. And all the nations of the earth will weep because of him. Yes! Amen!
8. "I am the Alpha and the Omega ? the beginning and the end," says the Lord God. "I am the one who is, who always was, and who is still to come, the Almighty One."

In the Beginning

I thought this was a great reminder...ENJOY! LGLO, Pastor Peter

"In the beginning when God created the heavens and the earth, the earth was a formless void and darkness covered the face of the deep, while a wind from God swept over the face of the waters. Then God said, “Let there be light”; and there was light. And God saw that the light was good; and God separated the light from the darkness. God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And there was evening and there was morning, the first day." Genesis 1:1-5

This is how God's story begins. Out of nothing, God brings about all that we know, and with these first five verses of the Bible a pattern is set that continues beyond the first chapter of Genesis. The pattern goes like this, "And God said, Let there be __________ ...and God saw that it was good.” Did you catch that first phrase, "God said"? That is, God created out of Word. Out of God's mouth came that which God desired. God spoke, and there was light, water, sky, land, night, day, creatures, humankind. God speaks, and creation comes. This is why the Gospel writer John said that, in Jesus, the Word became flesh among us. This is why God speaks to us, and we are created and re-created by God.

As we reflect upon beginnings, God has spoken a Word to us, and in that Word God has created that which is good. Through that Word, God has given us life. By that Word, we are. Tim Tate

A Little Fear and A LOT of Humility

"'Because the men who explored the land were there for forty days, you must wander in the wilderness for forty years ? a year for each day, suffering the consequences of your sins. You will discover what it is like to have me for an enemy. 43 'When you face the Amalekites and Canaanites in battle, you will be slaughtered. The LORD will abandon you because you have abandoned the LORD." Numbers 14:34 & 43

"Young men, in the same way be submissive to those who are older. All of you, clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, because, "God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble." 6. Humble yourselves, therefore, under God's mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time. 7. Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you. 1 Peter 5

I was struck at how harsh the words are in Numbers 14. Especially "You will discover what it is like to have me for an enemy." This section is focused on the Israelites grumbling after the spies came back from exploring the land of promise. Only Joshua and Caleb were full of faith and said move forward. The rest grumbled and it cost them the privilege of entering the land. They would wander for 40 years because of their sin. UGH! I truly never want to hear God say that zinger about me. I DON'T want to discover what is like to have God for an enemy because I know something very important...HE ALWAYS WINS!

That lead me to the humility angle from 1 Peter. God giving grace to the humble sounds much better don't you think? Him lifting me up whenever He sees fit sounds great to me as well and casting my anxiety on Him because He cares for me is an awesome promise of His grace. All of that sounds so much better than being His enemy and it seemed like a really simple solution. Here is how I summarize it.

If God says GO...I say, with a little fear and a lot of humility...which way and how far? If God says STAY...I say, with a little fear and A LOT of humility, where would you like me to be. If God says JUMP...I say, with a little fear and A LOT of humility, HOW HIGH and can YOU help?

A little fear and A LOT of humility goes a long long way. Have fun with it! LGLO, Pastor Peter

Sharing the Story

Disciples and the World

13"You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt has become tasteless, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled under foot by men.
14"You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden;
15nor does anyone light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on the lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house.
16"Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven.
17"Do not think that I came to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I did not come to abolish but to fulfill.
18"For truly I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not the smallest letter or stroke shall pass from the Law until all is accomplished.
19"Whoever then annuls one of the least of these commandments, and teaches others to do the same, shall be called least (X)in the kingdom of heaven; but whoever keeps and teaches them, he shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven.
20"For I say to you that unless your righteousness surpasses that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will not enter the kingdom of heaven.

Sorry about missing everyone yesterday for the update on how things are going. It was such a busy day that it just didn't seem like the time to have one more gathering. Lets try this for the week. Share the story of how it's going on the blog. You can include in this particular blog and we will "catch up" with how God is moving in each of us.

God is so good! Enjoy Him today as you share the story! LGLO, Pastor Peter

P.S. This text was emailed to me by Bob Mack. He is sharing texts with a variety of people from his email list and it was a great reminder this morning. Especially after praying for the lost last night at the prayer meeting. It was great to focus towards those who don't know Christ!

I was this way BUT NOW....

1 Peter 2:10. "Once you were not a people; now you are the people of God. Once you received none of God's mercy; now you have received his mercy."

What a difference a day makes! I know that saying is trite but the amazing thing about it is that it is so true. The contrast in our Christian life could not be more stark. Once we were not a people...now we are the people of God. Once we had not received mercy now we have received mercy. It is so great to live in Christ and the transformation could not be more stark.
I included a picture of caterpillar in the process of metamorphosis. We know that the caterpillar changes into a butterfly. The transformation could not be any more stark then going from a bug crawling on the ground to a bug flying in the air. Still a bug but RADICALLY different in appearance.
What has the transformation done for us? How are we different being the people of God? Receiving His mercy? We should be different...don't you think? Have fun being changed...LGLO, Pastor Peter

Creation

Sombrero Galaxy

Psalm 19

1 The heavens declare the glory of God;
the skies proclaim the work of his hands.
2 Day after day they pour forth speech;
night after night they display knowledge.
3 There is no speech or language
where their voice is not heard.

Last night as I was camping and I would've done the blog this morning but my phone was about dead.  Sorry.  Last night was also awesome being outside.  The moon was so bright and the creation so beautiful.  This Sombrero Galaxy above is a picture taken from the Hubbel telescope and it is one of a collection that is absolutely breathtaking.  As I was gazing at the beautiful moon I thought of all those pictures from hubbel and was amazed again at the wonder of God's creation.

This text from the Psalmist captures the wonder of how God's creation reveals Him to us but notice one line inparticular.  "Day after day..." and all of v. 3 "there is no speech or language where their voice is not heard."  You could add to this last verse...DAY AFTER DAY!

I want to tell of the glory of God day after day.  Don't you?  Have fun.  LGLO,  Pastor Peter

J-E-S-U-S

"And the Word became flesh and lived among us, and we have seen his glory, the glory as of a father's only son, full of grace and truth. From his fullness we have all received, grace upon grace. The law indeed was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. No one has ever seen God. It is God the only Son, who is close to the Father's heart, who has made him known." John 1:14, 16-18

I know that you all know this and I know this too but I couldn't help but be reminded again that it really is all about Jesus. It seems like every blog I've written over the last month has been focused that direction. Maybe it's me projecting on all of you about where you are at with your walk but I am convinced that we need to focus His way more and more. We get too so why not?! Have fun. LGLO, Pastor Peter

POWER

"He was in the world, and the world came into being through him; yet the world did not know him. He came to what was his own, and his own people did not accept him. But to all who received him, who believed in his name, he gave power to become children of God, who were born, not of blood or of the will of the flesh or of the will of man, but of God." John 1:10-13

"I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God for the salvation of everyone who believes: first for the Jew, then for the Gentile." Romans 1:16

These two verses are a true redefinition of power. Power to save! Power to raise the dead. Power to become part of the family of God. Awesome stuff! Think about it...the God of the universe is giving this to us! God is so good indeed! LGLO, Pastor Peter

The Story

I thought this was a great reminder for today. I love the story and I know you do too. Have fun today being a part of it. LGLO, Pastor Peter

"In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things came into being through him, and without him not one thing came into being. What has come into  being in him was life and the life was the light of all people. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not overcome it." John 1:1-5

I know I'm not the only one. I hate getting to a movie theater after the movie has started. (For me, the movie actually begins with the previews; I want to see what's coming up!) I want the whole story, so missing the first few minutes of a film almost makes it pointless to watch the rest.
Who would read a book by flipping past the first chapter? What parent would want to skip over their baby's infancy and move straight to toddler time?

John tells us that the Word has been there from the beginning, from the very first. God tells the story of the Christ from the start, from creation itself.

It kind of makes me want to stay for the rest of the story, especially the part that happens today. Nick Foster

"God of all time, thank you for letting me know that the story of Jesus starts at the beginning of time. Help me to be attentive today to how that story is being told in my life and in the lives of others. Amen."

Epiphany

Epiphany (holiday), a Christian holiday on January 6 celebrating the visit of the Magi to the infant Jesus
Epiphany (feeling), the sudden realization or comprehension of the essence or meaning of something

"I am the Lord, that is my name; my glory I give to no other, nor my praise to idols. See, the former things have come to pass, and new things I now declare; before they spring forth, I tell you of them."

Sing to the Lord a new song, his praise from the end of the earth! From Isaiah 42

"For from Him, and through Him and to Him are all things. To Him be the glory forever and ever. AMEN!" Rom. 11:36

I have had an epiphany on more than one occasion and I'm sure you have as well.  Seeing as today is the celebration of Epiphany or the celebration of the wise men visiting Jesus, I thought it would be worth it to share with you my most recent epiphany.  Here it is...make sure you are sitting down...don't have anything breakable near you...ya ready?

IT REALLY IS ALL ABOUT GOD THE FATHER, GOD THE SON and GOD THE HOLY SPIRIT!

I know you almost fell off your seat as you read that epiphany.  I did too.  Here's the thing.  I know it is obvious but as I have studied and prayed.  Shared and listened.  Studied and prayed again.  I have come to this simple conclusion....I am NOT focused enough towards God and it really is ALL about Him.  Now comes the difficult question...how do I change that?  and still work?  and love my family?  and love my neighbor?

Here is the great thing...focusing on God as the one and only center of the universe in a passionate pursuit of Him yields wonderful fruit.  In loving Him with all that we are we will love others more richly and more truly.  That is an awesome blessing of "seeking Him first and all these things being added to you".

Have fun in the pursuit.  He's already got you...enjoy being caught!  LGLO,  Pastor Peter

A Prayer

Carolyn sent me this prayer and I thought it was so good so I'm forwarding on to you. God is working at us from all angles. OUTSTANDING! Keep 'em coming! LGLO, Pastor Peter

New Year Prayers, from the diary of Ruth Bryan

1842
Precious Christ, I come with a large request for 1842: it is that You would be the "Alpha and Omega" of it. Do You not say, "Ask what I shall give you?" Yourself, Lord! You have most blessedly given Yourself to me. But I find sweet liberty to entreat more unfolding, revealing, and opening of Your glorious person, amazing work, and matchless love, than I have yet had; and more losing and treading down of SELF, too--that I may be lost in Your fullness, and forgotten and forsaken in Your soul-absorbing glories. Oh! raise me higher, draw me nearer, that I may daily die, and You live in me more manifestly. I just give myself to You, to live on You, to live in You, to live for You, more and more than heretofore, and that by the power of the Spirit resting on me. I humbly ask that mine may be a large and still-increasing portion; that, under fresh anointings, You, most lovely Jesus, may be more fully known, more loved, more served; for it is to You the Holy Spirit leads, of You He testifies.

Oh, do make this a large, rich, full year! You being increasingly honored in me, and I increasingly lost in You, and made an increasing blessing to Your dear people. An Ebenezer for past mercies befits me; large and magnificent have been Your bestowments; bountiful and constant Your favors to me--a poor worthless nothing! "Bless the Lord, O my soul--and all that is within me, bless His holy name!"

Lesson from Leviticus

Leviticus 22:31-33
"You must faithfully keep all my commands by obeying them, for I am the LORD. 32. Do not treat my holy name as common and ordinary. I must be treated as holy by the people of Israel. It is I, the LORD, who makes you holy. 33. It was I who rescued you from Egypt, that I might be your very own God. I am the LORD."

When I read Leviticus I sometimes wonder what is the point. When Christ came He fulfilled the sacrificial system completely. Because of that when I read Leviticus it seems so over the top related all the various ways in which we are to be holy. Then I read in Leviticus 22 (I probably saw it earlier but I'm a little slow) this kicker line "It is I, the LORD, who makes you holy." It isn't the sacrifice it's the LORD! That is a great reminder about this process that we are going through asking the question 'what would Jesus do?' It isn't answering the question correctly that draws us to Christ or draws others to Christ....IT'S CHRIST who does that!

One other interesting point about this text. The word remember is very prominent throughout the Old Testament and here there is a great 'remember'. "It was I who rescued you from Egypt, that I might be your very own God. I am the LORD." Remember that it was 'I who rescued you...' He rescued me too and it is great to remember that! Have fun! Big Reflector

The Moon Reflecting on the Ocean

"Does the moon make its own light? No, because it is not a star. Then why can you read by the moonlight? Well, this is because the Moon reflects the Sun’s light, but it only reflects about 7% of the light that falls on it. Earth reflects about 39% of the light that falls on it. If we could fill the sky with full moons (which would take about 105,000 full moons!), it would still be only ¼ as bright as the Sun is. The Sun is 465,000 times brighter than a single full moon!"  From ThinkQuest

"Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven." Matthew 5:16

I was amazed at this little trivia in terms of how much light is reflected from the sun.  7% of the light that falls on the moon is reflected?  WOW!  Remember a month or so ago when the moon was the brightest it has been in a long time?  It was amazing to see and yet still was only reflecting a small portion of the source.

We have the privilege to "reflect" the glorious beauty and light of the SON.  Here is the little catch though...we are not a source of light in ourselves BUT the LIGHT SOURCE LIVES IN US!  We do not reflect the light.  The light LIVES in us and shines through us.  We would be horrible reflectors because of our own sinfulness but we get to be tremendous shiners of the light because it is the power of the source, God Himself, within each of us.  Now all we have to do is get out of the way enough so people will see the light shining in us.  Have fun with it!  LGLO,  Pastor Peter

I LOVE FLORIDA

It is great to be back!  I LOVE FLORIDA!  I know there is a great deal of need here and that is an important part of why we are here involved with ministry but I have to tell you...I REALLY LOVE BEING HERE!  We drove all day yesterday and then today I spent at a soccer match which I left for at 6:30 a.m. and it was a great day out in the Florida sun cheering for Shelby as she played.

One of the bonuses of sitting out in the sun and enjoying the beauty of God's creation was to think about a serious of messages that I am going to share throughout 2009.  I am calling the series the "Life Verses" series and it will start sometime in January and go through the end of 2009.  At least I think it will.  That's where I feel like God is leading me at this point but we will prepare, plan and most importantly WAIT on Him and see where He leads. As I was thinking about it one of my favorite texts kept coming up in my mind and I thought I'd share it with you.

"How blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked, Nor stand in the path of sinners, Nor sit in the seat of scoffers ! 2. But his delight is in the law of the LORD, And in His law he meditates day and night. 3. He will be like a tree firmly planted by streams of water, Which yields its fruit in its season And its leaf does not wither ; And in whatever he does, he prospers." Psalm 1:1-3

What do you suppose it would be like if we asked the question 'what would Jesus do?' while we were meditating on His Word day and night?  Do you think the answers would come easier?

I thought that was a great question.  What do you think?  Much love and prayers.  LGLO,  Pastor Peter

Day 5 HOMEWARD BOUND

"But prove yourselves doers of the word, and not merely hearers who delude themselves." James 1:22

Great training scene from Star Wars Empire Strikes Back
Luke: All right, I'll give it a try.
Yoda: No. Try not. Do... or do not. There is no try

“Walk right side road, safe. Walk left side road, safe. Walk middle "guess so", sooner or later, squish, just like grape.” Those were the wise words of Mr. Miyagi from “The Karate Kid”.

I thought that I would share two quick thoughts that I have had while I have been talking with people here about walking in Christ. Yes, I have been on vacation and YES I talk with people about Christ on vacation. It's who I am and HE is the best so why wouldn't I talk about HIM? That's not one of the thoughts, sorry for digressing.

I was reflecting on this text from James 1:22 and thought about these two movie scenes. I probably should be remembering some profound book that I've read from some great saint or something but these two scenes kept playing out in my mind so I figure it must be the Holy Spirit.

The first scene from Star Wars is when Luke was getting trained by Yoda. I love it because it is so straight forward and is a great reminder for us as we ask the question 'what would Jesus do?' Here is the guarantee about Jesus. He would DO SOMETHING that is 100% for sure! I can even hear Yoda's voice in my ear "No. Try not. Do or do not. There is no try." Sounds just like James

The second scene is from Karate Kid and it is right at the very beginning of Daniel's training in Karate. Remember right after this scene he will start washing Mr. Miyagi's cars. Hysterical. How about this interaction? 'Are you going to ask the question 'what would Jesus do?' I guess so. Brothers and Sisters-san. Walk right side road, safe. Walk left side road, safe. Walk middle "guess so", sooner or later, squish, just like grape.” I don't know about you but I don't want to get squished just like a grape.

Go for it today. James said it best really. Don't just hear the Word. DO IT! Way before Nike and much BETTER! Have fun. Can't wait to be home. Much love. LGLO, Pastor Peter

Day 4 Vacation HAPPY NEW YEAR

"Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth; for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and the sea was no more. And I saw the holy city, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride adorned for her husband. And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, "See, the home of God is among mortals. He will dwell with them as their God; they will be his peoples, and God himself will be with them; he will wipe every tear from their eyes. Death will be no more; mourning and crying and pain will be no more, for the first things have passed away." And the one who was seated on the throne said, "See, I am making all things new." Also he said, "Write this, for these words are trustworthy and true." Then he said to me, "It is done! I am the Alpha and the Omega, the beginning and the end. To the thirsty I will give water as a gift from the spring of the water of life." Revelation 21:1-6a

"You have one business on Earth - to save souls." -- John Wesley

"The spirit of Christ is the spirit of missions. The nearer we get to Him, the more intensely missionary we become." -- Henry Martyn, missionary to India and Persia

"Christ alone can save the world, but Christ cannot save the world alone." -- David Livingston

"I have but one candle of life to burn, and I would rather burn it out in a land filled with darkness than in a land flooded with light" -- John Keith Falconer

"God isn't looking for people of great faith, but for individuals ready to follow Him" -- Hudson Taylor

"Some wish to live within the sound of a chapel bell; I wish to run a rescue mission within a yard of hell." -- C.T. Studd

"We can give without loving, but we cannot love without giving" -- Alexander Duff

"If I had 1,000 lives, I'd give them all for China" -- Hudson Taylor

"Expect great things from God; attempt great things for God" -- William Carey, who is called the father of modern missions

"He is no fool who gives up what he cannot keep to gain that which he cannot lose" -- Jim Elliot, missionary martyr who lost his life in the late 1950's trying to reach the Auca Indians of Ecuador

The last quote that I printed here is the one that was on my heart as I woke up this morning. It comes from a book called Through Gates of Splendor by Elizabeth Elliot or In the Shadow of the Almighty which is Jim Elliot's journals. Then I started thinking about this text from Revelation as I went through my devotional time and I was struck by something. If Heaven is so great because God is going to be with us and the overflow of His presence with us is all of the benefits of life with pain, sorrow, tears etc. then why in the world wouldn't we want to have as many people experience that as possible?

I have been having a great time on vacation. God has been refreshing my heart so much. Time with my family (though my kids have vanished with their friends often LOL) and time sharing life with old friends in Christ and in the community has been absolutely fantastic. Hard at times because people are hurting BUT great because we get to share it together.

I have become more and more convinced this week of this simple fact...God wants us to truly go and love others. It isn't about "trying" or "planning" or "thinking about it". It is about going and DOING IT in His strength for His glory! I know that sounds simple and you know what? IT IS! You have so much to give already and remember this...even if you had nothing in yourself to give you have EVERYTHING IN CHRIST TO GIVE. Read the text again and ENJOY HIM! Have fun! MUCH LOVE! HAPPY NEW YEAR! LGLO, Pastor Peter
